2017 is off to a strong start and we’ve received a record number of mandates since the start of the year. We have seen a significant rise in the number of interviews per candidate profile with 62% of candidates submitted being invited for interview, including ’range finding’ candidates - showing flexibility towards meeting those who may not fit the job spec perfectly - that we recommend for consideration.

Compared with the same time last year, it does appear to be an employees’ market with candidates taking longer to think about career moves, and an increased selectiveness about taking a new role. Hence it’s more important than ever to build strong relationships, offer a consistent candidate experience and seamless on-boarding.

Last month marked the first time that generation of electricity from coal has been surpassed by wind power (Financial Times, 5th Jan 2017). Having been in the coal trade from 1880 to 2005, we’ve felt very much a part of this transition - as you will see from the article about our oldest customer, Ted Partridge, in this edition.

Representative of this shift is our increased focus on gas and power roles. Matt Dwire who heads up our gas retail desk has established us in this space and he celebrates his first anniversary with Oil Recruitment next month. We look forward to further developments in this arena as we continue to evolve from our humble beginnings in coal!

Following the positive response to our 2016 salary survey we are pleased to announce that this year we’ll be producing a downstream salary survey for the first time. This will cover lubricants, speciality chemicals and fuel sales, supply and storage. To register your interest in this survey please email Keeley Robinson or John Surtees.

This quarter you can see the Oil Recruitment team at LPG Europe, the UKLA RAF lunch,
, The Forecourt Show, The Commercial Vehicles Show, Flame LNG and FPS. We hope to catch up with you at one of them!

Here at Oil Recruitment we welcomed Rachel Kay in January who has joined us to lead HR as the business grows. We also celebrate Peter Morgan’s five year anniversary with Oil Recruitment, he’s done a fantastic job in growing our shipping and bunkering desks - congratulations Peter. Plus, we look forward to keeping in touch with Anne Charmer as she takes a two month sabbatical (after nine years in the business) to travel to South Africa with her husband.

I hope you enjoy this issue and we’re keen to receive your suggestions and feedback as ever.

With best wishes
